Marlin Memories
Marlins celebrated the beginning of Mes Chamoru on Wednesday, March 1, 2017 in the school Cafeteria. This year's Mes Chamoru theme is "I fino'-ta yan kutturå-ta: Ta hungok, ta li’e, ta sångan pues nihi ta mantieni" which translates to "Our language and our culture: We hear it, we see it, we say it so let's hold onto it."
Mes Chamoru, or Chamoru Month, actually began in our schools. In the early 1970s, Mrs. Lainer, a Guam History teacher, initiated Chamoru Day at John F. Kennedy High School. Then in 1974, Dr. Robert Underwood and Elaine San Nicolas Cadigan, who were Social Studies teachers at George Washington High School at the time, got together and planned a Chamoru Week in the last week of February. The idea was to have each department in the school incorporate lessons on the Chamoru Culture into their curriculum for the week. At the end of the week there was an assembly with lots of entertainment such as guest singers and performances. GW's first Chamoru Week attracted so much attention, that the following year, other schools began hosting their own Chamoru Week Activities and eventually it became a district wide initiative that led to the island-wide Mes Chamoru we celebrate today. To open Mes Chamoru at the school, our students did a Bendision, which is a Chamoru Blessing to bless our celebration and festivities for the month. After the assembly, guest singer Sinora Masako Cruz graced us with some local Chamoru music by some of our famous Guam artists. Be sure to check back to see what events we've had for the month. |
